Tower Officers at All Saints Wokingham

The first surviving record of a Foreman was in the 1873 Parish Magazine report of the inaugural meeting of the Society of Honorary Change Ringers. In the front of the peal book is a list of tower foreman from 1880. Ekection of all officers since 1935 are recorded in the minutes of tower AGMs.

For most of the following century, foremen served for a very long time. WJ Brooks held office for 42 years, but in the last few years, he was not even present at the AGM, and instead of a foreman’s report there was a deputy foreman’s report. Whether he still rang is not known. Walter Pearce also took little part in running the ringing during his last few years in office.

In 1980, the ringers resolved that future officers would normally serve for no more than three years in any one office. There have been a few exceptions to that general rule, but also many much shorter terms of tenure.

Note – years given are inclusive, for example 1994 - 1995 means two years of service. The AGM is in January, so the actual term served excludes a couple of weeks in the first year and includes a couple in the following year, but it's simpler to think of each period as a whole year.
